Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a globally unique identification number assigned to legal entities that engage in financial transactions. Also referred to as an LEI code or LEI number, its goal is to identify legal entities in a publicly available database. Legal entities are organizations that engage in financial transactions, such as enterprise corporations like GM Informatics JSC. The identification is used in regulatory reporting to financial regulators and is required for all financial organizations and funds.
The identifier is expressed as a 20-character alpha-numeric code based on the International Organization for Standardization’s ISO 17442 standard. It establishes connections to critical information that enables identifying legal entities involved in financial transactions to be made clearly and uniquely. Each LEI database record contains information about the ownership of an entity, thereby answering the questions ‘who is who’ and ‘who owns whom’. As a result, the publicly available LEI data pool can be viewed as a global directory of non-individual financial market participants, which creates a fully legal yet transparent company structure for GM Informatics JSC.
Around the world, some LEI issuers issue and maintain identifiers and serve as primary interfaces to the global directory; these are mainly financial exchanges or financial data providers. These entities are authorized to issue LEIs by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF).
Lately, GM Informatics JSC and its many registered sub-brands like GMC, GMCoin, has achieved a transparency status for global Blockchain-related finance operations.
